Young’s Seafood has launched what it claimed to be the first branded ‘free from’ product in the frozen cabinet – a variant of its fish finger range.

“There are own-label ‘free from’ products in the freezer cabinet but so far none from a major brand except this one,” a spokesperson for the seafood company told just-food.

Young’s Free From Fish Fingers are made with 100% fish fillet and are coated in a special crumb, which are wheat, gluten and dairy free. The fish fingers are also free from artificial colours and flavours.

“We identified a clear opportunity for this type of product earlier this year, and the response so far has been amazing – both in terms of sales and dozens of positive calls from consumers to our Careline. Such products have been poorly represented in the frozen cabinet,” Young’s marketing controller Charlotte Broughton said.

The fish fingers hit the shelves earlier this month and, within just a few weeks, Young’s said the product is already proving a “big hit” with consumers.

Broughton added that, given the positive customer feedback, it is “considering other opportunities for ‘free from’ within our wider range going forward.”
