Seven-Eleven Japan Co. has reversed its policy forbidding franchisees reducing the price of products as they near their sell-by dates.


The move follows a government report which said banning discounting of near sell-by date items was an abuse of the company’s dominant position.


In June, the Japanese government monopoly watchdog the Fair Trade Commission ordered Seven-Eleven to end its practice of preventing outlets from discounting food products.


The franchises will now be able to sell near-expired products at bargain prices as long as the price is not below the original purchase price, the company said.
