Dutch dairy co-operative Campina has sold its Belgian soft cheese business to French firm Bongrain.

Campina said late last night (14 May) that it had offloaded its Passendale arm to Bongrain for an undisclosed sum.  Bongrain, based in the French town of Viroflay, is the world’s largest speciality cheese producer.

Campina said it wants to expand its hard cheese brands, including Campina Milner and Campina Volmer.

“With Campina Milner we have a very strong brand in a number of countries, which we will be gradually expanding,” said P.J. Hilarides, who heads Campina’s cheese and butter business. “Moreover, we are now fully occupied with the introduction of Campina Volmer, another example of the growth potential of our unique North Holland cheese.”

The sale comes a week after Campina said it would close one of its four production sites in the Netherlands.
