StarLink producer Aventis is looking to sell its CropScience unit as it sharpens its focus on pharmaceuticals operations.

Aventis staff-management sources said earlier this month that the company had decided to sell rather than float the business. The company is also in the process of selling its animal nutrition unit to CVC Capital Partners, say union sources at the Franco-German group.

Aventis has been touting its CropScience sale proposal to Monsanto, DuPont and Dow as well as German chemical groups Bayer and BASF. Industry sources say that any buyer would have to pay around €3.7bn, plus about €2bn in debt.
