Russia has halved its production of black caviar this year to 50 tonnes, and reduced exports of the product from 30 tonnes last year to 20 tonnes this year, according to state fisheries officials.
Of the 450 tonnes of sturgeon caught in the Volga delta during the 2003 fishing season, 200 tonnes were supplied to fish farms in a bid to boost stocks, reported Agence France Presse.
This year, fish farms have released around 60 million young sturgeon into the Caspian and Azov seas, the officials said.
The Russian fisheries industry has been trying to cut caviar production and repopulate sturgeon stocks in a bid to ensure a long-term supply of the product after sturgeon numbers were found to be dwindling.
