Switzerland’s largest retailer Migros is to increase bread prices tomorrow (4 December) due to a poor Swiss wheat harvest this year.

The retailer will add CHF0.05 to 500g wholemeal and half wholemeal loaves. Standard kilo loaves will rise by CHF0.10, while specialist breads, such as brioche plaits, will rise by CHF0.10-0.20 to reflect the increased cost of other ingredients.

Supplier IP Suisse recorded crop shortfalls of up to 30%, leading to flour price rises of between 12% and 17%.

Migros has pledged to drop prices again, once ingredient costs fall back.
