Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. celebrated the start of construction for its newest store in the Silicon Valley city of Mountain View as robots helped break the ground and then served fresh Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnuts to guests.
Krispy Kreme, which opened its first Bay Area store in Union City in March, expects to complete construction of the Mountain View store in August. The new Krispy Kreme store will open in the Rengstorff Shopping Center, at 2146 Leghorn St., within easy access of Highway 101.

The robots came from Krispy Kreme’s future neighbor, Nomadic Technologies, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of mobile research robots and wireless networking equipment. And given Krispy Kreme’s newest Silicon Valley location, the robots made a perfect fit for Wednesday’s groundbreaking, said Brad Bruckman, the area developer for Krispy Kreme in Northern California.
“We’re very excited about bringing Krispy Kreme to Mountain View,” Bruckman said. “As soon as the Union City store opened, customers were asking us, ‘When are you going to Mountain View?’ It’s great to be opening in a community where we already have a following.”
Like Krispy Kreme stores across the nation, the Mountain View store will feature the traditional “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign, drive-thru service, lots of customer seating and a glass viewing area so that people can see the doughnuts actually being made.
The red neon “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign is a unique Krispy Kreme tradition carried on at each of its stores throughout the country. When illuminated, it tells customers the store is making batches of fresh, hot, yeast-raised Original Glazed doughnuts right there, right now.

By GlobalDataOnce open, the 4,000-square-foot Mountain View store will employ up to 150 people and offer fast, friendly counter service seven days a week. Additionally, the store will be easily accessible to those who want to pull into Krispy Kreme, buy doughnuts and continue on to the office or home.
Krispy Kreme offers 15 varieties of doughnuts, including the best-selling Original Glazed. To assure quality and consistency, Krispy Kreme produces its own doughnut mix and its own equipment. Beverages such as Berkeley Farms milk, Pepsi, fruit juices, bottled water, and of course, coffee, are also available at Krispy Kreme stores.
Krispy Kreme has its own specialty blend of coffee made from a selection of 100 percent arabica beans, the finest coffee beans in the world, roasted to Krispy Kreme’s exacting specification. The coffee beans are ground fresh in stores for each individual pot of brewed coffee to ensure that customers enjoy a delicious cup of smooth, rich coffee at all times. Krispy Kreme coffee is also available for purchase packaged by the pound.
More Krispy Kreme stores are planned for Sacramento and other Northern California locations.
As a new member of the Mountain View community, Krispy Kreme plans to carry on its nationwide tradition of partnering with local nonprofit organizations. In Union City, the store shared a portion of its opening-day revenue with the East Bay nonprofit group Centro de Servicios and continues the relationship through daily donations of doughnuts to the group’s food bank. Krispy Kreme also works with Centro de Servicios’ employment referral service to find potential workers.
Founded in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1937, Krispy Kreme quickly became a Southern tradition and today is expanding throughout the country. Krispy Kreme currently operates more than 150 stores in 27 states. An estimated 3.5 million Krispy Kreme doughnuts are made each day.
