Hot on the heels of new research (published in the April 2000 Annals of Internal Medicine) revealing that walnut consumption helps lower cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of heart disease, Diamond of California is introducing new Sesame Glazed Walnuts. The product is available now in California and New York, and will be distributed nationally later this year. Packaged in eight-ounce re-sealable, stand up bags, Sesame Glazed Walnuts give consumers a tasty and easy new way to incorporate this wonder food into their diets.

Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts can increase the body’s beneficial HDL cholesterol level while protecting the blood vessels from plaque buildup, one of the causes of heart attacks. Several health studies have shown a link between a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke and several forms of cancer. The latest health study, conducted by the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and the Loma Linda University in California, concluded that daily consumption of just a handful of walnuts lowers the risk of coronary heart disease by 11 percent.

Diamond’s Sesame Glazed Walnuts provide the same sweet and crunchy taste consumers have enjoyed in restaurant salads and desserts, without the need for preparation. Kettle cooked in a sweet caramelized glaze, and lightly sprinkled with sesame seeds, Diamond’s Sesame Glazed Walnuts are ready to use straight from the bag. Because the packaging is re-sealable, the product stays fresher, longer.

“As the largest grower cooperative in the world, Diamond of California is continually developing new and innovative ways for consumers to enjoy the health benefits of walnuts,” said Michael Friedman, vice president of marketing for Diamond. “Diamond’s new Sesame Glazed Walnuts are a tasty and healthy addition to any meal of the day, or perfect for a snack on the run.”

The product retails for $3.49-$3.99 per eight-ounce package and will be sold in the produce or specialty foods section of retail grocery stores. One 1/4-cup serving has 190 calories, 13 grams of fat, and provides a good source of protein and Omega 3 fatty acids. Each package contains six servings.
