Smash Foods, a US-based better-for-you snacks and jam business, has bolstered its footprint in the UK with a co-manufacturing partner.

Set up in 2019 by co-founder Anna Peck, Smash Foods first entered the UK market in 2023 with health-food retailer Holland & Barrett.

A spokesperson for Brooklyn, New York-based Smash Foods, which started out as Chia Smash, told Just Food that the business has an “ambition” to increase listings across the UK grocery space. For the time being, the no-added sugar products are only stocked in Holland & Barrett.

“There are some sensitivities around what information I can share,” the spokesperson said in terms of the co-packing arrangement, but added its local manufacturer already produces jams, spreads and sauces.

All supply for the UK market is now served from the partner producer rather than being imported from the US, where Smash Foods has listings with Whole Foods Market, Walmart, Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco.

The product line-up features fruit-filled snacks and fruit spreads made with natural ingredients.

By having a local UK presence through a manufacturing partner, Smash Foods is seeking to “realise efficiencies” that can be passed on to the consumer and to “have a shorter supply chain, allowing for quicker reaction times to demand and fresher product”, the spokesperson said.

While the US and the UK are the only markets served presently, “European growth is a ‘phase-three’ target for 2026”, the spokesperson added, refraining to disclose revenue and growth numbers.

As well as a rebrand to Smash Foods, the company has introduced two new flavour varieties to its range – cherry pomegranate and raspberry.

“These additions complement the existing range with bold, innovative taste profiles packed with natural ingredients and the added goodness of chia seeds,” Smash Foods revealed in a statement announcing the UK move.

Peck said: “This is a huge milestone for us. The rebrand and new flavours reflect our mission to create delicious, nutritious spreads that consumers love. Onshoring production is a game-changer, allowing us to better serve our growing UK audience. We’re very excited for what’s next for Smash Foods in the UK.”

Smash Foods would not disclose the name of the manufacturing partner, but the statement identified Atlante as a “leading global sourcing partner”.

Headquartered in Bologna, Italy, with a London-based UK team, Atlante “specialises in private-label development, branded distribution and foodservice supply, as well as brand creation”, according to the statement.

Bharat Sisodiya, the UK head of new business at Atlante, added: “It is a pleasure to work with great brands and great products like Smash Foods, and play a part in their success story of scaling internationally.

“We look forward to our continued partnership in the next phase of their ambitious journey and bringing this great product to more UK consumers.”
