German meat producer Tönnies Group will operate under the new name of Premium Food Group from next year.
The corporate rebranding comes amid the company’s “development” in recent years from being purely a meat processor to a broader food manufacturer.
With the new name for the group, the Tönnies brand will be solely associated with the company’s meat production business unit.
The Tönnies signage on the cold storage facility at the company’s headquarters in Rheda-Wiedenbrück will be replaced with the PFG logo next year.
Tönnies shareholder Maximilian Tönnies said: “The structural transformation process, which has now resulted in the new name of the holding company, was initiated years ago. In doing so, we are positioning our company for the future. We want to ensure that the business areas make decisions even faster and act more independently: Each area is already its own company.”
Founded in 1971, Tönnies has grown from a small butcher’s shop into “one of Europe’s leading” meat companies.

Alongside meat and sausage products, the company produces and markets plant-based items, convenience foods, animal feed, sauces, soups, and by-products such as proteins, fats, and flours, among other products.
The company also supplies raw materials to the pharmaceutical and biofuel industries, operates cold storage facilities and has a logistics company specialising in fresh and ultra-fresh products.
In September, Tönnies struck a deal to acquire beef assets in Germany from Netherlands-based peer Vion.
The group also made an investment in the fermentation startup Nosh in August.
In March, Tönnies announced the closure of one of its export packaging departments for Asia, impacting approximately 140 employees.
This department, located at the Tönnies plant in Weißenfels, Saxony-Anhalt, had been part of the Tönnies group since 1990 and served as the company’s second-largest slaughterhouse, employing about 2,200 people.
