Israeli food manufacturers launched 2,700 “healthy” food products this year, a year-on-year increase of 20%, and this trend looks set to continue.

According to data supplied by the food division of the Manufacturers Association of Israel, 88% of Israeli food manufacturers focused their production on the “health food category,” investing ILS300m (US$70m) in improving the health standards of their products during the year. This included the reduction of fat, cholesterol and sugar combined with the addition of vitamin supplements and natural products.
As part of the initiative to increase total R&D funding to LIS500m in the next five years, in 2006 food manufacturers invested LIS250m in R&D, the Association said.
