Saputo is to close a cheese plant in Canada as it bids to improve efficiency within its domestic dairy operations.
The company plans to shut a site in Warwick in Québec in June and transfer production to other sites in the province. Around 100 staff will be affected, although some could be offered jobs elsewhere within Saputo’s Canadian dairy business, it said.

It is the second announcement of a plant closure in Canada in five months for Saputo. In November, it told staff at a site in Winkler in Manitoba that the facility would shut next January.
Saputo said it does plan to invest C$36m (US$35.2m) in new fixed assets at other sites in Canada.
Last month, Saputo announced cuts further afield, when it said it planned to quit Europe.
It announced the closure of its cheese plant in the German town of Heiden that supplies the country’s retailers. Saputo also plans to close a plant in Newcastle Emlyn in Wales that supplies mozzarella to foodservice customers. The closure of the UK site is subject to consultation with staff.
