Dr Alan Hirsch, the head of The Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, is investigating the hypothesis that flavour intensifiers could promote weight loss and prove to be an alternative to diet.

Dr Hirsch, a Neurologist and Psychiatrist, explained: “By enhancing the taste of food, the brain is fooled into believing you’ve eaten more than you actually did, making you feel full faster.”

The latest six-month study conducted by Dr Hirsch is is an extension of a study done ten years ago using odors for weight loss. Around 15,000 participants are being given different flavor enhancers each month over the six-month period. These include the tastes of kiwi, almond, cheddar cheese, pistachio, and cocoa.

Dr Hirsch added: “Diets don’t work. That’s why we opted to test a substance that doesn’t require will power, but rather, induces a sense of fullness.”
