European Union (EU) Agriculture Commissioner-designate Mariann Fischer Boel was subjected to a blistering attack on her suitability for the job during Wednesday’s hearing in the European Parliament.
A Spanish Socialist MEP said her answers to questions were completely vague and unsatisfactory, in particular her refusal to make any substantive comment about the EU’s sugar regime ahead of next spring’s anticipated World Trade Organisation appeal decision on European sugar subsidies.
Making sarcastic reference to Fischer Boel’s frequent mention of the USA during her testimony, Masip Hildalgo pointed his finger saying: “I tell you that if you were before the (US) Senate, you would never get through.”
